New Wine List to be published this month

We are publishing our new ontrade wine list in the next week or so, with plenty of new arrivals from France, Spain and Italy featuring in the offering as well as a new Premier Cru Champagne from Vincent D'Astree. To mark the occasion we will be holding a tasting in October, so I'll keep you posted.

Laudun Sol et Sens Blanc, 4 Chemins

Sales of this excellent wine continue to develop as more restaurant buyers get the opportunity to sample it and see how well it complements a variety of food dishes. Another strength of this wine is its value; coming from a region (Rhone) more strongly associated with reds, this blend of Grenache and Viognier is the equal of many wines two or three times its price.

Domaine PiqueRoque 2010 rose wines

The next delivery from Domaine PiqueRoque in Provence is due with us at the end of this week, so we will be able to ship the wines from Monday 11 July. To make ordering easier, I have put them on our gifts website: no more calling us with card details, simply click on the products and order online. I hope this makes things easier for everyone.

Last week's event

Canvas Lounge, Knutsford, Thurs 9 June

Not many tickets left for this event, so call us if you want to come. Details are further down on the blog, but a reminder it's only £15 a head for food and wine tasting - cheaper than a couple of yesterday's panninis and a pint of barely drinkable coffee at one of the nation's favourite coffee outlets, and far more likely to make you feel better too. If we get the weather on the evening of June 9, and there must be a decent chance even allowing for the fact that May has been dire, it will be great to sit outside into the early hours finishing off some wines from Provence and the Rhone. The Second City

Reports in today's press suggest that the mantle of second city is passing inexorably from Birmingham to Manchester, a transition no doubt accelerated by the football events of the past weekend and the imminent relocation of a huge segment of the BBC's media workforce to Media City in Salford Quays. Relish, Thursday 21 April

Thanks to everyone who came to Relish in Nantwich last Thursday for the excellent wine and food evening. David and Ruth put on a great night, with a superb variety of foods coming out of the kitchen at regular intervals all through the evening. The wines on taste went well, particularly the Waipara Sauvignon Blanc and PiqueRoque rose, and the quiz proved an entertaining way to bring the evening to a close. Congratulations to the two deserved winners of the magnums of rose!

Relish is going to be opening in the evenings at weekends from now! Given its fantastic position in the town centre, the quality of the food and drink there, and the merits of the venue as a place to enjoy yourself, this venture should go from strength to strength. The decor inside is first rate, the staff friendly and the atmosphere very welcoming.

We're already thinking about the next wine and food night so we'll keep you posted via email, facebook and information in the deli. At this stage, we're looking at doing something in July when the nights are long and chilled wines a must.

Wine Report on BBC today - what do you think:

On the BBC news site today, a report about wine tastes is the second most popular and it does raise some interesting questions.

The central argument, and one that is bound to appear plausible to a mass readership, is that price is not a reliable index of quality in connection with wine, and that therefore it is foolhardy to spend more than around a fiver on a bottle. The report's suspiciously thin data:
The blind test at the Edinburgh Science Festival saw 578 members of the public correctly identify the "cheap" or "expensive" wines only 50% of the time.
lends itself insidiously to the inference that there is no link between price and quality, but all it really shows is that the average wine drinker should not bother spending more until his palate is more educated. Had the same test been done on sommeliers or wine buffs, I am sure the results would have been quite different.
The conclusion at the end of the article is illogical:
Lead researcher psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman said: "These are remarkable results. People were unable to tell expensive from inexpensive wines, and so in these times of financial hardship the message is clear - the inexpensive wines we tested tasted the same as their expensive counterparts.'
taste being subjective and susceptible to both education and refinement. If, out of 600 people, half found a child's painting as good as a Picasso, it would be ludicrous to assert that this meant the former stood equal with the latter.
My own view, for what it is worth, is that whilst there is come correlation between price and quality, it is obviously not a straightforward mathmatical function, nor would anyone in the trade expect it to be so given the variables that have an impact on the price of a bottle of wine. But this is not the same thing as there being no link at all, albeit that this message has a populist appeal to those inclined to believe that all expressions of taste are down to snobbery.

It's the news all lovers of great rose wine have been waiting for: the 2010 vintage of PiqueRoque's VDP and CDP wines arrives with us tomorrow!
Most of the Cotes de Provence rose is already allocated to customers keen to get their hands on one of the very best rose wines available in the UK, particularly as the sun appears to be getting out a bit. Harpers rated this superb wine as one of the 'Best Buys' nationally when they surveyed the UK rose market in 2009 and, as you would expect, the 2010 vintage is as good as ever.
The Vin de Pays, which is very popular with the ontrade, has undergone a bit of a makeover, with a sleek, vertical label replacing the old format which looked too similar to the Cotes de Provence. The wine is superb this year: samples arrived with us a few weeks ago and we are delighted to report it is as delicate, beguiling and refined as ever.
